Reader in Geospatial Data Science

University of Glasgow

I am a Reader in Geospatial Data Science at the University of Glasgow. My research connects two questions: how can computation better represent the geographical relationships that shape our world, and what can those representations tell us about how cities and regions function?

I want to help build a geospatial science in which geographical context is central to how models learn, explain patterns and support decisions. Working with students and collaborators, I develop and investigate methods in GeoAI and geospatial computing, with an emphasis on approaches that are interpretable, computationally efficient and attentive to differences between places. My ambition is to advance both the methods themselves and the geographical understanding they make possible.

In urban research, I study how urban form and infrastructure organise economic activity and everyday life, from networks of cities to neighbourhood environments. I am particularly interested in the connections between physical infrastructure and the social, cultural and organisational spaces that sustain communities. Through this work, I aim to provide better evidence for decisions about where to invest, how to improve access and how cities can respond to social and environmental change.

Before joining Glasgow in 2021, I was an Assistant Professor at the University of Twente. My earlier experience across research, government and industry continues to inform how I connect methodological questions with problems beyond academia.

Leadership and service

University leadership

Since 2024, I have served as Head of Postgraduate Taught Programmes in Geomatics at the University of Glasgow. My work brings together curriculum development, professional accreditation and engagement with the geospatial sector across six programmes:

I also serve as a member of the University’s Honorary Degrees Committee (2025–present).
